Pied Kingfisher

Kingfishers are a nearly worldwide family of birds with 118 species. This one is a pied kingfisher

It dives into the water to catch fish. I thought all kingfishers did that, but apparently not.

We saw it on our motorboat excursion into the Okavango Delta. Its perch in the photo is just a few feet above the water so dinner is probably nearby.

We saw some little fish in the water, minnows or the African equivalent. We did not get to see a kingfisher dive in and catch a fish. Another good reason to go back!
