When the elephant died in the Selinda Reserve, the local pride of lions took possesion of the dead body. But others gathered around, waiting their turn.
This black-backed jackal was among the waiting animals. A stone's throw from the dead elephant, the lions ignored it. Though the jackal walked by our jeep, just a few feet away, it mostly ignored us.
We saw these several times during our game drives. In Chobe National Park, we found a second leopard eating one. Jackals are predators, scavengers, and it turns out, prey as well.
