  • Parks and Recreation Commission, 2000 - 2001
  • Advises City Council on all matters related to parks and recreation. Appointed to complete an unfilled term. As a commisioner, I participated in public hearings on condition of athletic fields. The commission drafted the Athletic Fields Master Plan, which was presented to the City Council.

I was struck by the lack of young people in the public meetings of the commission. Young people are among the chief stakeholders in athletic fields. After all, they're the ones who play on them.

  • Parks and Recreation Commission, 2001 - 2003
  • Re-appointed to a full term. Formed a committee of 3 commissioners to examine youth representation. We discovered that Belmont was virtually alone in the county in having no official youth participation in government, so the committee recommended expansion of the commission with 2 seats for teenagers. The full commision endorsed the recomendation, and the City Council adopted the ordinance. Both actions were unanimous.

  • Outdoor Recreation Task Force, 2002 - present
  • This fifteen-member citizen task force, representing field sports leagues, open space advocates, and three Belmont Commissions, will recommend to the City Council this Summer how Belmont's Athletic Field Master Plan should be funded and implemented, and how Belmont's remaining open spaces might be preserved for public recreation.
